Expedition 161 - 18th November 2006
The Kinlochmoidart Path

We had a long break due to me being away on courses, and our return was out of the usual sequence, which might have cost us a few members. As it was, only two explorers turned up, Fern and Rowan, but we had four helpers, Claire, Elizabeth, Philippa and Sharon, and two dogs, Ellie and Honey getting her paw in for the first time.

We started at Kinacara where everyone admired the fine leaded windows before walking along the road and looking at the old mill house. From there is was quick walk in the sunshine to the Tramp's Cave, where everyone heard about the tramp who used to live in it and Rowan got himself good and wet in water dripping from the rocks.

A few yards further on we started up the old track, with our two young explorers setting a good pace up the hill. As we walked along the path we found much of interest, I was showing off my new knowledge of mosses and lichens and Rowan successfully identified a tree that had been struck by lightning. Ellie grabbed a few sticks and Honey pretended to fetch her ball but kept losing it.

We stopped for our wafer break on a fine recessed platform below the path; it had probably been used for charcoal burning in the eighteenth century but I couldn't find any charcoal. Then we carried on in the sunshine, seeing the goats below us on the hill and hearing curlews on the sands. At the end of the path we climbed up to the old Dun and had a few minutes to admire the view before it started to rain and we left for lower ground.

We came back along the road but it turned out to be an interesting journey with two seals swimming quite close to us and several herons feeding on the shore.
