Expedition 143 - 15th October 2005
Shielfoot

A good day, with five explorers: Allan, Chris, John Donaldson, Robin and Zander, plus four helpers, Andrew, Howard, Lucy S., Sam W. and Sheila W., no dogs this time.
We assembled at the upstream end of the village, the area which used to be known as Luib and the group heard a little bit about each of the families as we went through the old houses and ruins. As ever, there was probably more interest in the Torr than in the old houses and we spent a good bit of time going round the old vitrified fort and looking at the vitrification. Everyone had some sort of theory about it. The old swing on the tree at the croft got some attention and there was some unusual interest in the lichens this trip.
While on the top, we saw a single jackdaw, the first any of us had seen for years in the district.
As ever, I was relieved when everyone was once more back on the level ground and we continued round the village returning along the old peat track west of the Torr. This was a nice day out but, apart from a few interesting caterpillars on the path, and a very tame group of deer in the village, there were not many items to inspire great drawings afterwards at the Pantry.
