Expedition Acharacle 13th October 1998

The expedition
met at Acharacle Church at 9.30 in pouring rain. The members were Allan, Claire, David, Ellen, Frazer, John, Karen, Kathryn, Margaret, Robert, Robbie, Robin and Sheila.

First we went to the Manse garden to look at the big Wellingtonia and monkey puzzle trees. Then we made a quick detour to the Old Post Office where we used the telescope to look at the teal on the Loch.
At about 10.15 we met John Cameron who took us round the lower church yard to explain all the graves and tell us about the people.

After this we visited the beech woods close to Shiel Bridge from which we walked back past the old estate office to go up past the school and visit the old school well and the 'Lookout Hill' above Cameron's depot.
We descended the wee glen with a flagstone quarry in it and reached the road by crossing the bog, finally returning to the church via the lochan.

The pictures
Allan, Frazer and Robert all concentrated on the graveyard. Robert turned the stories of two of the graves into a strip cartoon. Robbie limited himself to one grave (bearing his sister's name!) and a sketch of the school well.

Claire, Karen and Ellen divided their pictures into separate events - the 'custard pie fungus' (probably a young Piptoporus betulinus) was picked up by Ellen and was growing on a beech tree. The strange object at the top left of Ellen's picture is, I believe, a flower holder from the graveyard.

Margaret also drew a divided picture, with a little narrative added.   Robin, as ever, adopted an individual approach and showed the visit to the flagstone quarry in the rain and a view of himself slipping down the hill while the spirits of the graveyard hovered overhead.
